Company: MS Filter Inc.
Established: 2002
Description: The MS Filter package drinking water treatment plant meets all North American drinking water standards and regulations, without coagulation chemicals or complex operational requirements. The process is designed for small systems ranging in capacity from 50 to 2,500 m3/day. Multi-Stage Filtration uses roughing filtration and slow sand filtration with other optional unit processes, depending on raw water quality, which include:

  • Pre-treatment ozonation. Ozone is used to break down high molecular weight organic compounds into biodegradable forms of carbon which are more readily assimilated by the biological slow sand filter. A very safe and simple ozonation system is used, requiring very little maintenance.
  • Pre-treatment advanced oxidation, for reduction of recalcitrant forms of organic carbon and/or exotic contaminants.
  • Post-treatment biologically-active GAC filtration, used as a final polishing stage for raw waters containing very high levels of organic carbon.
  • Post-treatment limestone contactor for reducing finished water aggressiveness.
Through the use of one or more optional unit processes, the MS Filter is capable of treating relatively poor-quality raw water. The combination of ozone and biological filtration is capable of removing or reducing organic compounds such as humic and fulvic acids (disinfection by-product precursors), taste and odour-causing compounds (geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol), toxic algal metabolites (microcystin-LR) and other natural organic compounds. Recent studies have concluded that ozone + biological filtration provides an effective treatment for pharmaceuticals, personal health care products and endocrine disrupting compounds, which have been frequently detected in surface water sources. Slow sand filtration is widely recognized for its ability to remove protozoan cysts; the consensus of dozens of research studies conducted around the world over the past 30 years indicates that a mature slow sand filter will achieve between 4.0 and > 5.0 log removal of Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia cysts. Ozone is a powerful disinfectant and when used in combination with slow sand filtration, provides a extremely effective barrier to water borne diseases. The fundamental design philosophy of the MS Filter is simplicity. Designed for small systems, the operating requirements are minimal and generally consist of cleaning the filter media approximately once every three or four months. Flow through the plant is by gravity and power requirements for the system are very low. Although the plant can be fully automated, the basic equipment package does not require a PLC control system. The basic MS Filter plant has no replacement components and very few moving parts, resulting in very quiet operation. The life-cycle costs of the MS Filter package drinking water plant are among the lowest of all available equipment.
